Fall 2017 Tournament Recap – October 2017

The 2nd Annual Fall Brawl was a great success! Thank you to all the players for a high energy, fun, and competitive day of pickleball. In all, 68 players (thank you to our last minute subs!) played 242 games of pickleball in 5 poolsWe started play at about 8:45, and when a staff member came down to turn off the lights at 5:45, the final game in the C pool finals was still being played. (They finished in the semi dark.)

The play in all the pools gets tougher and tougher each tournament we have. And yet, we think all the players, from beginners to experts, have fun playing pickleball all day and competing for medals.

Thank you to our organizing committee for all the hard work that went into the tournament:
Tim Berla – Day-of court assignments, communications
Kate Peterson – Scoring software, website/registration, graphic design
Jeff Shumway – Bracket distribution, court setup, communications, pizza
Ted Olsin – General support
Linda Oslin – Scorekeeping
Pat Shumway – Snack packs and Brownies!

A special thank you to all the volunteers who made the day run smoothly, even though we have a few bumps to overcome! Barb and Bill Pothast, Dean Avery, Pete Kingston, Peter Elias, Cindy Helber, and Nuttaya Likitchollatam. ( Sorry if we missed thanking anyone!) We also want to that thank the players who filled in for absent players at the last moment: Eunice Bottorf, Jim Peterson, Dave Parker, Joe Galvez, and Taihao Quan. There are lots of little things that need to be taken care of to make something like this successful, and we couldn’t do it without a lot of help.

Special thanks to Bridget He from Cayman Sports for her sponsorship and prizes for the raffle. Please check out her shop at 2853 Boardwalk Dr in Ann Arbor for  a consistently expanding selection of pickleball paddles, balls, shoes and other gear.

Congrats to our winners!

Spring 2017 Tournament Recap

Saturday March, 4th 2017 was our largest round robin yet! 64 players from ages 13-77 competed in 5 pools, played 223 games and 20 medals were awarded.

For this tournament we drastically improved scoring and court assignments by using an automated system designed and built for our unique setup by Tim Berla and Kate Peterson.

The tournament committee wants to thank the many volunteers – who fed balls to the players, made line calls, and much more – you made the tournament run so smoothly. Thank you to Casey Thompson who answered everyones questions, and organized and delegated court assignments. Thank you to our dedicated score keeper Linda Oslin and to Pat Shumway for providing the delicious brownies and snacks. Thank you to The Meri Lou Murray Rec Center and it’s staff!!

We couldn’t have done it without you.

Special thanks to the core committee – Jeff Shumway, Tim Berla, Ted Oslin and Kate Peterson – for all the time, energy and effort they put into making it all happen.

Spring 2016 Tournament Recap

On Saturday March 26, 2016, we played the First Annual Ann Arbor Spring Pickleball Fling. Thirty two players from age 13 to 77 competed in three pools. The competition was fierce, the sportsmanship was excellent, and everyone had a great time (except when I missed that one shot).

Watch the video recap created by John Marion (Thanks John!)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCmHvCns3LY&feature=youtu.be

The tournament committee wants to thank the many volunteers who made the tournament run so smoothly. Kate Peterson designed and built the web site, Linda Oslin was our score keeper, and Pat Shumway provided the delicious brownies and snacks. We also had lots of help from Dean Avery, John Marion, Jill Pollock, Tony Mangiaracina, Steve Camron, Nuttaya Likitchollatam, Eunice Bottorff, Asif Amin, and many more who we are not recalling at the moment. Thanks for all the help – we couldn’t have done it without you.

The players, the volunteers and the web designer want to especially thank Tim Berla, Ted Oslin, and Jeff Shumway for all the time, energy and effort they put into making the first annual AASPF possible! It was a great success!

Here are the results of the competition.
